                    A Lecture on Fracking Technology

Fracking: Energy Independence or Environmental Disaster?

On March 29th, 3:00 p.m., the Former Director of the Science Advisory Board (SAB) of USEPA, Dr. Donald Barnes spoke at the Lecture Room, College of Environment about whether fracking would bring us natural gas or environmental disaster.

Dr. Donald Barnes was three times awarded the Gold Medal for Outstanding Service during his career, the USEPA’s highest award, for a range of accomplishments in scientific risk assessment and the scientific basis for regulation of dioxin compounds.

The lecture, sponsored by College of Environment, the Chinese-English Bilingual Teaching Team for “Introduction to Environmental Science and Engineering”, Guangxi University, covered the following topics:

1.     Introduction on our need for energy.

2.     The process of fracking.

3.     The good points and questionable points.

4.     Current USEPA efforts.

5.     The recent role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

During the whole lecture, Dr. Donald Barnes provided great opportunities for interaction with students, which made the atmosphere lively and orderly. After the Question & Answer part, the one-and-a-half-hour-long impressive lecture ended in the warm applause of the students.

After the lecture, further discussion among the students and Dr. Donald Barnes boomed. Fracking seems to be a totally new technology to the students in China. What is fracking, is it good or bad indeed and how it benefits or risks us? The discussion mainly focused on the water pollution risks and economic benefits of fracking, some students supported it while some showed their disagreements after weighing the goods and bads.
