       为探讨有关环境问题,广西大学环境学院和《环境科学与工程导论》双语课程教学团队特邀美国环境学家在环境学院报告厅举办一场公开的专题讲座。。该讲座题为“液压破碎法开采天然气——实现能源自给还是导致环境灾难?”,主要探讨采用液压破碎法开采天然气有可能出现的环境问题及其评价。

主讲人:Donald Barnes 博士

Donald Barnes 博士曾在美国华盛顿环境保护署作为一名高级行政人员工作了20余年,任职美国环保署科学顾问委员会的主任,现已退休。在担任美国环境保护署科学顾问委员会主任前,Barnes博士曾为农药和有毒物质的助理行政官担任过10年的高级科学顾问。在他的职业生涯中,由于在监管二恶英类化合物的科学风险评估和科学基础方面所作出的一系列贡献,他曾三次荣获美国环保署的最高荣誉——杰出贡献奖金质奖章。在其带领下,为探讨美国环境保护署制定有关保护公共卫生和环境条例的科学依据,该科学顾问委员会撰写了数百篇报告,主办了数百场会议。

An environmental scientist will deliver a Lecture tomorrow on Environmental issues.

The lecture, titled “Fracking: Energy Independence or Environmental Disaster?”, is free and open to the public. Sponsors for his Lecture are College of Environment, the Chinese-English Bilingual Teaching Team for “Introduction to Environmental Science and Engineering”, Guangxi University.

Dr. Donald Barnes will speak at 3 p.m. Friday (March 29) in the Lecture Room, College of Environment. The talk will provide an overview of ongoing work in the environmental problems potentially caused by natural gas exploration using Fracking Technology.

Dr. Donald Barnes is retired after more than 20 years of service at the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in Washington, DC, where he was a member of the Senior Executive Service serving most recently as the Director of the Science Advisory Board (SAB) of USEPA.

Prior to leading the SAB, Dr. Barnes enjoyed ten years as Senior Science Advisor to the Assistant Administrator for Pesticides and Toxic Substances.  During his career, he was three times awarded the Gold Medal for Outstanding Service, the USEPA’s highest award, for a range of accomplishments in scientific risk assessment and the scientific basis for regulation of dioxin compounds.

Under Dr. Donald Barnes’s leadership, the SAB produced hundreds of reports and conducted hundreds of public meetings examining the scientific and technical underpinnings of USEPA regulations designed to protect public health and the environment.
